Diamonds are created when carbon is subjected to extremely high pressures and temperatures found in the earth’s lithosphere, which lies approximately 90 to 240 miles below the earth’s surface, making it the hardest known natural substance. Most diamonds are 1 billion to 3.3 billion years old, which is amazing considering the Earth is estimated to be 4.5 billion years old.
